Have you ever been so nervous you felt sick to your stomach? Yes! Then this article is for you. As a beginner in public speaking, you must know the 3 P’s: Prepare, Practice, and Perform. Prepare your introduction and your relevant points. Practice your speech. Perform as your most authentic self. Knowing the 3 P’s helps you stay focused and keep the audience engaged. What the 3 P’s don’t help you with is the nerves.
“Don’t you dare ruin this suit” says the genius in me.
Shaking in my skin, I feel my stomach somersaulting up to my throat. I scan the room searching for the nearest trash can. I feel my anxiety at the highest level it has ever been. The room full of my family, closest friends, and strangers. Phone lights are shining, cameras are recording, and ears are listening. I am terrified! Terrified of looking and sounding stupid. Terrified of embarrassment. Public speaking has never been my thing. Shocking I know! Me being a supermodel and all. Most people are surprised and don’t understand my fear of it, which is why I never tell this secret.
Well, the secret is out! I am terrified of public speaking. I am the ‘Nauseous Newbie’ who desires not to be. For the past year, I have thrown myself into public speaking. Any chance I get I grab the mic and find my way to center stage. Public speaking is part of my purpose of inspiring others. Inspiring others to fight the battle of self-sabotage and the genius within. You know, the angel and devil sitting on your shoulder effect. This is something that we all experience on the daily.
Starting something new is never easy.
If you are someone who wants to confidently speak in front of people but can not find the courage to get up there, ask yourself this question: “Do I want to make a difference?”
If your answer is “Yes”, dive deeper into why you want to make that difference. You will gain self-confidence and self-awareness at once. This gain will develop your courage and the next thing you know you have a microphone in your hand and standing in the center of the room making a difference.
If your answer is “No”, continue to sit in the audience and take notes to make yourself better in other ways. You will be a Nauseous Newbie in another field of life.
